About

The Geophysical Institute in Bergen has long traditions for international research in polar oceanography and polar ice studies. Since we do not control our own infrastructure for polar field work, international collaboration is particularly important to maintain field activities which supplement and link to theoretical, modelling and remote sensing studies. The International Polar Year has now passed, leaving a clear message to the general public about significant and dramatic change in polar regions.

Bergen Polar Ice Group was initiated in 2006 as part of a proposal to the Bergen Research Foundation internationalization program. Since then a workshop has been held, and the group will continue as an instrument for cooperation on polar ice science ini Bergen.
The group is now based also within the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, co-located within the Geophysical Institute and the group will be coordinated by Lars H. Smedsrud , Sönke Maus and Anders Sirevaag
