The turbulent boundary layers above and below the air-sea interface

Summary                            

Except in extremely thin laminar layers immediately adjacent to the water surface, the  flow of the air above, and the water below, the sea surface, is turbulent under virtually all circumstances.  As a consequence, the fluid flow in the near-surface boundary layers is often assumed to have properties similar to those of turbulent flow near a solid surface, obeying the scaling laws of Prandtl, Kolmogorov, Monin, and Obukhov.  We investigate these assumptions, how well they hold under different circumstances and for the flux of physical quantities such as momentum, heat, and mass, and outline current approaches to the measurement and modelling of the boundary-layer properties.

Talks are normally 45 minutes, and the room is usually available until 14:00 for discussions after the talk.  Anyone (from the Bergen area or elsewhere) who wishes to give a seminar in this series is invited to contact the Scientific Coordinator
