Background (to top)
I am a professor of physical oceanography, with focus on mixing processes at high latitudes. My research interests cover meso to small scale processes in ocean, ocean mixing and atmosphere-ocean-ice interaction. I am a sea/ice-going oceanogrpaher and have expertise in collecting, processing, analysing and interpreting data from conventional ship and moored instruments, as well as various complex platforms including microstructure profilers, gliders, moored profilers, and eddy-covariance systems.
I obtained my Ph.D. (2001) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, on a study of the "Dynamics of winter cooling in Lake Geneva", that addressed the convective plumes and the spill of dense waters as a result of convection on shelves. Having recognized the relevance of the topic to high-latitude processes, such as dense water formation and cascade in the Arctic shelves, I applied for and received a post-doctoral researcher grant from the Research Council of Norway (FRINAT programme). I completed my postdoc project entitled "Boundary layer processes affecting dense water flow on a slope" at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. The study concentrated on the dense overflow from Storfjorden, located in Svalbard. Originally I am Turkish and a graduate of the Technical University of Istanbul (ITU; B.Sc., civil engineering; M.Sc., hydraulics engineering). I filled the faculty position at the Geophysical Institute (GFI) in 2007. I am the leader of the oceanography research group at GFI and am also affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR).
