Structural geology e-modules
These flash-based e-learning modules have been made for my textbook. To get the most out of them, get a copy of the book too! However, feel free to use them independently if you wish. Open or download by clicking module names:
Structural geology: A general introduction and a primer for the other modules (Chapter 1).
Deformation: Deals with deformation of rocks, deformation matrices, definitions etc. (Chapter 2).
(Strain in rocks): (Chapter 3). To be published in 2012.
Stress (Chapters 4-5).
Rheology (Chapter 6).
Brittle deformation: Fractures and fracture of rocks (Chapter 7).
Faults: Various aspects of faults and faulting (Chapter 8).
Plastic deformation: Microscale and atomic-scale deformation in the plastic regime (Chapter 10).
Folding (Chapter 11).
Foliations (Chapter 12).
Lineations (Chapter 13).
Boudinage (Chapter 14).
Shear zones (Chapter 15).
Kinematic indicators: Mostly about sheared rocks/mylonites, but also faults (Chapters 15 and 9).
Contraction: Structures forming in the contractional regime (Chapter 16).
Extension: Structures forming in the extensional regime (Chapter 17).
Strike-slip: Strike-slip faults, transpression and transtension (Chapter 18).
Salt tectonics: An overview of salt tectonics (Chapter 19).
Balancing and restoration: About the balancing and restoration of sections and maps (Chapter 20).
Stereographic projection: About stereographic plotting and basic use of stereonets (Appendix B).
e-learning is a somewhat different way of learning. When I wrote my textbook I wanted to explore this aspect of learning as well, believing that some things come easier through the use of live animations and different wordings. This handfull of e-modules does not represent a substitute for the book, just a supplement.
