Sinai: Faulted sandstones
My study of deformation structures on the Colorado Plateau is now complemented by a related study of faults and deformation bands in western Sinai together with students and colleagues at the CIPR.

Faults and deformation bands
Left picture shows the dramatic reduction in porosity of the Nubian Sandstone within a cataclastic deformation band. The bands occur in damage zones to faults such as the one shown in the right picture. PhD student Atle Rotevatn for scale. An important aspect of the research is to recognize different types of deformation bands and obtain an understanding of why they form where and when they form.

Fluid flow and deformation bands
The picture shows a fossil fluid flow front. Fluids apparently didn't care about the cataclastic deformation bands because they are thin and not very extensive. To understand the way deformation bands affect fluid flow is an important aspect of the study.
