My research interest is in theoretical and computational linguistics with a focus on Tigrinya. Tigrinya belongs to the Abyssinian Semitic language group spoken in Eritrea and Ethiopia.
Currently, in my doctoral research I am investigating Tigrinya applicative constructions within the LFG theoretical framework. I am specially interested to study the interrelationship of word order, case and agreement marking that characterizes object functions in the language. The project aims to account for this phenomenon by using LFG's formal description of constituent, functional and discourse structures.
I am implementing a Tigrinya grammar in the XLE, a computational environment designed to parse and generate LFG grammars. I take part in the ParGram project, an international effort which aims to develop parallel grammars for a wide variety of languages such as English, German, Norwegian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Georgian etc.
I also participated in the LEXIN project as a translator of the Norwegian-Tigrinya Internet dictionary.
