Research & Activity:
My principal scientific tool is crystallography and I am head of the crystallography
laboratory at the Institute of Chemistry.
Two chief fields of research interest may be mentioned. The first aims at
systematically produce and determine structural features (geometrical, vibrational and
electronic) of silasesquioxane cage compounds. These include homo- and hetero-
substituted cages, functionalised with catalytic ligands, as well as development of
linked cages in order to achieve potential donor/acceptor complexes using appropriate
donor/acceptor molecules. Additional experimental tools used to this end are; EHMO-
calculations, IR, Raman, NMR, normal-coordinate analysis, structure-structure
correlation analysis, and first-principle theoretical calculations of electron densities.
Solid state phase transitions are also explored.
Secondly, new organic metals; cationic radical salts of derivatives of
tetrathiafulvalenes and thiophenes as well as Se and Te based analogues, are
synthesised and explored with respect to their electronic properties (potential
compounds in molecular electronics). Recoupling of gathered information and
knowledge in order to direct/redirect and improve methods of reaching main
objectives.
In addition, a third field of interest is in new antioxidants applied to polyolefins,
plastics and elastomers are being developed and characterised, exploring the
antioxidative properties of organotellurium compounds. These exhibit several types of
antioxidant properties and may also be regenerated in situ, thus being potentially both
multifunctional and catalytic.
