You should read Steven C. Smith's biography A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann (University of California Press, 1991). You should also try to catch the 2-and-a-half hour radio documentary Bernard Herrmann: A Celebration of His Life and Music (Crawford/Coate, 1988; this has been broadcast online on this site and might turn up again...). There will be a bibliography made available at a later time.
