Essay writing course
For the autumn term of 2013, I'll be running the course "Bachelor thesis in Media Studies" at our department. The course will focus on undertaking and reporting on a small individual research project. (July 3, 2013)

Promotion
In mid-June the Faculty formally approved my application for promotion ("opprykk") to full professor, which means that as of September last year, I've been professor of media studies at the Uni of Bergen. Which is great. (July 3, 2013).

New project funded
A longitudinal study of the NRK's online news, starting early 2013, that I'm running, got funded by the Norwegian Council for Applied Media Research. That's good. (Feb 1, 2013).

Teaching broadcasting history
For the spring term 2013, I'm teaching a course on Broadcasting history for the media studies bachelor students at my department. (Feb 1, 2013)

Hilde Van Den Bulck in Bergen
During April 2012, Hilde Van Den Bulck will be Visiting Scholar in my department at the Uni of Bergen. Hilde is Professor and Head of the Department of Communication Studies, Universiteit Antwerpen, where she also heads the research group “Media, Policy and Culture”. Hilde studies media policy and media culture, and during her stay in Bergen we’ll continue our collaborative analyses of public service media policy. (Feb 4, 2012)

New projects
In the late-2011 round of research grants from the Norwegian Research Council, two projects I'm involved in got funded. Accessing and analysing the blogosphere: charting the distribution, flow and development of statements across online social networks, lead by Dag Elgesem at my department, got funded through the VERDIKT scheme. The project will run for four years, and I'l be contributing to its early phase with analyses of the blogosphere. In addition, The Impact of Social Media on Agenda-Setting in Election Campaigns: Cross-Media and Cross-National Comparisons, lead by Gunn Enli at the University of Oslo got funded in the FRISAM category. Also a four year project, I'll act as national partner throughout the period. (Dec 15, 2011)

Visiting QUT
From late August 2011 till the end of January 2012, I'm visiting scholar at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI), at Queensland University of Technology. The stay is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and is part of my work on the project Online Media Participation and the Transformation of the Public Sphere. (Sept 12, 2011)

Consultative statement on media policy white paper

Seminar: New media and citizenship
On March 18, I organized a seminar at my department on new media and citizenship. Christian Christensen (Uppsala University) talked about social media and the "ephemeral citizen", and Jakob L. Jensen (Aarhus University) presented findings from his survey of Danes' media use and the new interfaces of the public sphere. More info (in Norwegian). (April 6, 2011)

Vox Publica: Focus on public support of the media
During spring of 2010, Vox Publica, the online magazine published by my department, will feature a section for discussions of public support of the media. The initiative coincides with the government appointing a committee to evaluate the current Norwegian support mechanisms. I'll be contributing pieces throughout the spring. Seminar presentations published by Nordicom
In early December, Nordicom published the presentations from a seminar I organized together with Brita Ytre Arne last February. Taking a recently published book by Espen Ytreberg titled Hva er medievitenskap (What is Media Studies) as a starting point, the seminar included commentaries from Peter Larsen, Helle Sjøvaag and Frode Guribye. New job
In August, I started my new job as Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) of media studies at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen. So far, I'm happy about it. (Aug 14, 2009)

PhD thesis
In early February, I defended my PhD-thesis titled Public Broadcasters, the Internet, and Democracy: Comparing Policy and Exploring Public Service Media Online. The thesis consists of a lengthy introductory contextualizing discussion (part I) and five articles (part II). Part I and the first article of part II is available in full text. Consultative statement on consumer choice in the Norwegian television market
On behalf of my department I've written a consultative statement to the Ministry of Cultural and Church Affairs regarding the Norwegian Media Authority's recent report on the possibilities for facilitating individual consumer choice of television channels through new regulatory measures (in Norwegian). Award
My text "Morgendagens NRK: Allmennmedievirksomhet" [The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation of Tomorrow: Public Service Media] won the award for best article in a competition held by the The Norwegian Association of Media Researchers and The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) to mark the corporation's 75 year anniversary. The award is 10 000 NOK and publication in Norsk medietidsskrift. More info. (Oct 30, 2008)
