An Ott Parsivel² droplet size disdrometer continually measures at the GFI tower. Rainrate, phase and size distributions are acquired every 1 min.

The laser beam between the two housings is attenuated due to precipitation particles. One can derive droplet size and speed from the duration and strength of attenuation. This in turn allows to calculate droplet size and velocity spectra, and hydrometeor types.
