Coupling Lithosphere Deformation and Stratigraphy, COLORS project, 2016-2021. Seven post doctoral fellows, one PhD.

The COLORS projects aim is to understand the links (couplings and feedbacks) between tectonics, erosion (and climate) by inverting the stratigraphic record through modelling. This project will be organised around three major research themes to addresse the overall aim of the project:

  • Dynamics of extensional basins and feedback with surface processes. The main objectives of this theme are 1) To understand rheological and thermal controls on extensional rift and passive margin geometry in 2D and 3D. 2) To understand interaction and feedback between continental rifting and surface processes in 2D and 3D. 3) To understand interaction and feedback between passive margin formation and surfaces processes in 2D and 3D.
  • Dynamics of compressional basins and feedback with surface processes. The research objectives that will be addressed are 1) The development of coupled thermo-mechanical and surface-process models (2D & 3D). 2) To constrain Surface-Process model parameters using well-calibrated natural examples. 3) The testing of forward model.
  • Stratigraphic signature of high-resolution surface processes and of 3D lithosphere flexure. The main objectives of this theme are 1) To create a new SPM taking into account the whole depositional profile (Sources and Sinks). 2) To address key scientific questions of the Source to Sink.

COLORS will assemble a team of international collaborators including five research institutes (University of Bergen, GFZ Potsdam, Géosciences Environnement Toulouse, ISTerre, Géosciences Rennes, Universitat de Barcelona) and TOTAL S.A..
