My field is physical oceanography. My research interests cover meso to small scale processes in ocean, ocean mixing, and atmosphere-ocean-ice interaction with focus on high latitudes. I am an observational oceanographer and have been involved in collecting, processing, analysing and interpreting data from conventional (ship and ice camps) and moored instruments, as well as various complex platforms including microstructure profilers, gliders, moored profilers, and eddy-covariance systems.
I obtained my Ph.D. (2001) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, on a study of the "Dynamics of winter cooling in Lake Geneva", addressing convective plumes and the spill of dense waters as a result of convection on shelves. I conducted my postdoc research on "Boundary layer processes affecting dense water flow on a slope" at the Geophysical Institute (GFI), University of Bergen. The study concentrated on the dense overflow from Storfjorden, located in Svalbard. Originally I am Turkish and a graduate of the Technical University of Istanbul (ITU; B.Sc., civil engineering; M.Sc., hydraulics engineering). I filled the faculty position at GFI in 2007. I am leading the oceanography research group and am also affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR).

Physical oceanography, including the boundary layer processes, dense water overflows, turbulence, fine and microstructure data acquisition and interpretation, seismic reflection techniques to image oceanic finestructure, convective processes leading to dense water formation, turbulence in the under ice boundary layer, air-ice-sea interaction, internal waves and their non-linear interaction, turbulence parameterizations; Physical limnology, especially winter cooling dynamics, turbulence and convection.
