Zero point energy (this hbar omega half) is the lowest energy of a quantal oscillation. No lower energy is
possible. See below - at the end.

Zero point energy        500_little_cut_from_above_ZERO_POINT_ENERGY.png

Zero point energy (this hbar omega half) is the lowest energy of a quantal oscillation. No lower energy is
possible. For many modes - each has its zero-point energy. For infinitely many modes - infinite energy.
There is an understanding that this is not acceptable: the potential energy does not have a given absolute
value (when do you have 0 potential energy - standing on the floor or standing on a table?)
Thus claims about machines producing FREE ELECTRIC ENERGY by taping the vacuum energy

are considered non-scientific, if not fraudulent (see eg. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/home-quantum-energy-generator
or ON EXTRACTING ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY
FROM THE VACUUM http://www.cheniere.org/techpapers/on_extracting_EM%20energy.htm

Have a look at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-point_energy  where you can read both about the energy generators
at  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-point_energy#Utilization_controversy   and then again about
"the zero-point energy offers an intriguing possibility for explaining the speculative positive values of the proposed cosmological constant"
at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-point_energy#Gravitation_and_cosmology  which should motivate you
to take a standpoint on some of the statements of "modern" cosmology and particle physics.

Very interesting is the comment on Casimir effect - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-point_energy#Experimental_observations
- that could be explained without zero-point energy. Casimir effect - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect
which brings you (now, november 2013) both ends of the opnion ....
